Now that warm weather has finally arrived, it's hard to think about fall. But come November, ISOMS members will have a day to remember, filled with educational programming, ceremony, camaraderie and a festive start to the holiday season.
Mark your calendar and prepare to attend the 2009 ISOMS Annual Meeting and Education Program on Saturday, November 14. This year's meeting will be held at The Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel, located on Chicago's Magnificent Mile — 909 North Michigan Avenue.
David E. Paquette, DDS, MS, MSD of Charlotte, NC will be the meeting's guest speaker. He will discuss — from the orthodontist's perspective — the placement and effectiveness of temporary orthodontic anchorage devices, as well as the treatment of cleft palates without expanders. CE credits will be awarded for completion of this course.
The day will begin with a hearty breakfast buffet at 7:30 AM. The educational program will begin at 8 AM and the business meeting and election of new ISOMS officers and delegates to AAOMS will be conducted during the annual luncheon. Programming will wrap up by 3 PM on Saturday, allowing attendees to take advantage of the enticing Michigan Avenue shops and restaurants decorated for the holiday season.
The ISOMS Executive Committee will meet at The Westin on Friday evening, November 13, before the ISOMS Annual Meeting.
A detailed meeting announcement will be mailed with the preliminary agenda. In the meantime, plan ahead and reserve a room at the Westin. Guests can call the hotel's toll-free number, 888-627-8385, to reserve a room and receive the group rate of $189.00. When making a reservation, be sure to mention the ISOMS meeting.
So enjoy the warm weather while it's here, but come fall, be ready for an exciting day in Chicago! Consider bring along your orthodontic colleagues — the invitation can be an early holiday gift.
The Illinois members (delegates and alterantes) who will represent ISOMS at the AAOMS Annual Meeting to be held at The Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada, October 11-15, 2009, will gather on Saturday, August 22, with other AAOMS District IV members from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and the Public Health Service and Department of Veteran's Affairs. The meeting will be held at The Embassy Suites Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. The caucus chairman is Dr. Brent T. Garrison of Indianapolis.
The AAOMS Annual Meeting will be held in Chicago in fall 2010. ISOMS will not hold a regular fall meeting in 2010, but encourages all ISOMS members to attend the AAOMS meetings instead. Details will be forthcoming, and will be posted here on our web site as well as the AAOMS web site.
At the March 1 membership meeting, Dr. Bobofchak announced that the executive committee had reviewed the Society's budget and financial status and although the Society is financially sound and working within budget, it would be prudent to anticipate increasing expenses in the future and propose a dues raise from $175 to $200 annually, effective with 2010. Dues bills are sent out in the fall. ISOMS has not raised dues since 1999. The membership is welcome to comment prior to a vote at the next membership meeting.
Over 130 members attended the spring educational program held at the Marriot in Oak Brook on March 1. Attendees earned 6 hours of credit for the whole day of lecture by attorneys Glen D. Crick and Lillian Walanka, who discussed topics related to the use of controlled substances in office practices and DEA regulations, and Dr. Robert Bosack, who addressed topics related to understanding anesthetic adversity.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery colleagues and other professional colleagues gathered on Saturday, October 4th, 2008, for a unique learning experience at the ISOMS Annual Meeting and Educational Program at The Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel in Chicago.

Over a chilly March weekend in 2008, ISOMS hosted ACLS training at The Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook, IL for members and their staffs. About 75 people attended the two-day session. Basic life support and CPR certification training was provided by Acute Care Education Systems, Inc. ("ACES"). The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation is pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Skiba is the recipient of the 2008 OMSF Ambassador Service Award. This award, presented only when deemed appropriate, is given to a leader amongst OMSF Ambassadors who has shown outstanding service to OMSF. The OMSF is fortunate to have a group of surgeons who serve as Ambassadors. Ambassadors advocate OMSF programs, especially the REAP Annual Campaign, by personally contacting their colleagues and also by making presentations at state and regional OMS Society meetings.
Dr. Skiba has demonstrated strong initiatives in support of OMSF. He is being honored for the variety of ways in which he has advocated support of research and education in our specialty through the REAP campaign. His efforts have been instrumental in building the much-needed resources of OMSF for the future.
The Ambassador Service Award will be presented at the AAOMS Annul Meeting Opening Ceremonies in Seattle, WA on September 17, 2008.
